Top Furniture Retailers Expand Into New Markets Using Warehouse On Wheels

National furniture retailers Matter Brothers Furniture and Furnitureland South recently implemented the Warehouse on Wheels system by Demountable Concepts to efficiently make home deliveries in markets further than 100 miles from their distribution center.

Furnitureland South, a Demountable Swap Body customer for 15 years, needed a way to deliver furniture from their Jamestown, North Carolina distribution center to a new, growing market in Florida. They implemented the Warehouse on Wheels system which lets them shuttle multiple containers on a tractor-trailer to Florida and swap them to straight trucks operated by non-CDL drivers for final mile home delivery.

Matter Brothers Furniture invested in the Warehouse on Wheels system to make home deliveries in remote markets to the north of their Fort Myers, Florida distribution center. Prior to Warehouse on Wheels, their delivery drivers made long drives with excessive windshield time at the start and end their day.

With Warehouse on Wheels furniture remains untouched from the distribution center to the point of delivery, and final mile delivery straight trucks can be operated by less expensive, easier to source non-CDL drivers. It's a more efficient alternative to Class A CDL drivers driving stem to distant markets and delivering from PUP trailers in neighborhoods or cross-docking to straight trucks.

Matter Brothers' operation's manager, Rich Torrey, describes the Demountable experience:

"Partnering with Demountable Concepts is by far the best logistical move Matter Brothers has made to date. The distance and travel time between our Ft. Myers, Florida distribution center to our Northern delivery areas caused us to push hours of service limits as well as productivity on every truck and route heading north.

Loading and line-hauling Demountable containers eliminates lost travel time to save an average of 5 hours per route. Miles driven are reduced while average stops per truck have increased from 8 to between 12 and 14. All the trucks utilizing Demountable containers are rated at 25,500# GVW so we can utilize non-CDL drivers who are exempt from all the DOT regulations. Matter Brothers couldn't be more pleased with this transition and plans to utilize Demountable containers and trucks in all of our current and future long-distance deliveries."
