New Jersey Window Manufacturer Reduces Number Of Trucks In Fleet While Maintaining Impeccable Service Levels - November 2002

Ideal Window Manufacturing, based in Bayonne, NJ is a great example of a company adapting to its environment and thriving in it. For over six years, the company has been using the demountable truck body system by Demountable Concepts. By outfitting regular straight trucks with multiple interchangeable bodies, Ideal's deliveries and loading for the next day are done simultaneously.

Being headquartered in a residential neighborhood, Ideal was restricted from conducting any nighttime operation. Before implementing the demountable body system, the company owned and operated two trucks for each driver. The driver's second truck could be loaded while he was out making deliveries with his first. Obviously the costs associated with operating twice as many trucks as drivers were significantly impacting the company's profits. Insurance, maintenance and registration fees were all double what they should be.

The company decided on the demountable system because they could still use non-CDL straight trucks, but they operate their fleet like a tractor-trailer operation. According to the company, "We have cut our fleet size from 20 trucks to 12. Obviously our costs are lower."

The demountable body system allows a freestanding body at the warehouse to be loaded during the day. When the driver returns, he simply demounts the empty body and mounts the loaded one. No warehouse personnel are required to wait around for the drivers to return and the drivers are always on the road early.

Without the demountable system, Ideal would have had to maintain two trucks for each driver or move out of a facility that meets all their manufacturing needs. Company officials agree on the final results, "The system has truly been a life saver for us. The performance of the system has made it very easy for us to know we made the right decision."
