Amarr Garage Door Uses Demountable Bodies To Reduce Warehouse Overtime and Increase Driver Productivity
- 2005
Over the past six years, Amarr Garage Door has taken action to reduce warehouse overtime and increase driver productivity. Using the Demountable Truck Body System by Demountable Concepts, the company can now have the driver's next trip ready before he returns to the warehouse.
Up until the demountable system was implemented, Amarr would pull and stage orders in very small warehouse facilities and then wait for the truck to return to begin loading. Loading would begin in the late afternoon and if the driver was especially late, loading would often continue the next morning. Not only were overtime costs high, but delivery service suffered.
With the demountable truck body system, Amarr can now load the next delivery run without the driver being there. The system allows the standard straight truck to use multiple, interchangeable bodies. While the driver is out making deliveries with one body, warehouse personnel are loading the second body. When the driver returns, he takes about five minutes to swap bodies and he's ready for his next trip. Because warehouse personnel can load directly into the freestanding body, the need for a large staging area is eliminated.
The first demountable system was implemented in the company's Baltimore branch. Since then, branches in AL, WI, CA, NJ, FL, VA, PA, MI, MN and NC have followed. Company managers report significant reduction is warehouse overtime; more than enough to cover the cost of the system. And, since the driver's loads are always ready when he clocks in, delivery service has also been greatly improved.
Demountable Concepts has helped companies in many other industries including building materials, millwork distributors, furniture retailers, janitorial supply companies and party rental companies. A free videotape and product literature is available. The company also has a demonstration unit available.
